Comedy had never seen such unpracticed success. The shows included a cast of stock characters: archetypes upon which many of today’s comic characters are built. Pantalone, the bitter, rich miser, Zanni, the clown, and the Innamorati, or lovers, wrestled along plot lines consisting of such elements as lovers separated by a mean, slightly lecherous father; clowns who screwed things up and then came to the rescue; and doctors who knew little of medical practice other than the enema, and who practiced in full disregard of the Hippocratic oath.

The main problem is that producers are union-busting and presenting shows under the guise of Broadway. A successful Broadway show will always tour to make money. But basically, a Xerox copy of the Tony Award winner is being shipped out to the rest of the country. The Unions Yes. We have unions. Three of them.
