Probability measures on metric spaces by K. R. Parthasarathy PDF

Having been out of print for over 10 years, the AMS is extremely joyful to deliver this vintage quantity again to the mathematical group. With this high-quality exposition, the writer supplies a cohesive account of the idea of chance measures on entire metric areas (which he perspectives as a substitute method of the final concept of stochastic processes).

The design of the smaller research projects will be discussed, then the focus will shift to the long-term perspective. The design of a developmental research project can be split into two phases: the phase of the preliminary design. and the phase of the elaboration of the course design. 284 KOENO ORA VEMEIJER The result of such a research project will not be final. New versions of the same course will be worked out in new projects. New insights may even result in the development of alternative courses.

This is basically the Socratic method, although the role of the student is more active in realistic mathematics education. As the term reinvention suggests, the original invention process can be used as a model. An analysis of the history of mathematics will bring the developer much information that can be used in the design of a course. But there is another access route. Developmental research shows that children's spontaneous solu- DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH AS A RESEARCH METHOD 285 tion strategies can also be used to put the developer on the track of a possible reinvention-route (Streefland 1985; Gravemeijer 1991).

264 MARGARET BROWN us to analyze the situation further and to institute remedial action. In England it is possible to argue that it was the publication of the international comparative data (Robitaille & Garden 1989) that finally triggered legal enforcement of a national curriculum and national testing across all subjects. Data alone, however, do not help us interpret and understand the situation, although they may stimulate us to attempt to do so. The results of SIMS attainment tests alone do not shed much light on the nature of and the reasons for the differences between English pupils and, say, Belgian pupils, although they suggest some hypotheses.
